One of those surreal life moments to have your photos on page 3 of the UK’s biggest Sunday paper… Going to the newsagents on Sunday morning… My cat came along too (he likes to come on a walk!). It was Scottish Summer weather … one of those days where the rain isn’t cold or big but is so tiny it gets everywhere - I think it’s called a smir up here in Scotland.
Opening the paper on the newsstand… keen to skip past Boris Johnson and Michael Gove leering on the front cover. You don’t get ‘told’ if your photos are going in. But there it was- page 3 - All over page 3… my photos of winter swimming and a credit to my exhibition at the Skylark.
The article was by Jean West, a local, excellent freelance journalist, on keeping safe in the sea as the number of ‘wild’ (outdoor!) swimmers increases. Obviously it had to have a sensational headline (not by Jean). The article is online here (you can get a couple of free articles before having to pay for the Times).
I was a (broadsheet) page 3 girl! (I spent my teenage years in Essex at the height of page 3 of The Sun’s lad culture)
What did it feel like? There were no horns tooting nor confetti cones… Indeed, really, honestly? Nothing at all. The newsagent owner was mildly pleased for me. My children didn’t give a monkeys. I got bit of a delighted glow when I connected back with my teenage self and remembered how I would read and absorb the Sunday Times religiously - the Style magazine and all current affairs. It was my Sunday church back then. (Long before I became cynical about newspaper bias… especially the Murdoch empire.) I also got an email from the picture editor following up with ‘We ran them on Sunday; they looked great’… Picture editors aren’t the most verbose nor prone to enthusiasm so this was high praise indeed. And a small cheque came through.
On reflection: I’m delighted it’s happened, it was great to have my photos acknowledged nationally… and it does look rather good, doesn’t it?
There is always something next though… one peak conquered and onto the next … So now I’m trying to figure out where the photos should go next so they get the right place for outdoor swimmers. If you have any ideas, please let me know!
